The issue of youth athlete burnout is one that has been addressed on many occasions and a topic that we have referred to a number of times in our blogs. It can come as no surprise that burnout has received so much attention given that it is an issue that can have serious consequences for young.Burnout, by comparison with overtraining, has been defined as physical or emotional exhaustion caused by long-term stress, the perception of which often relates to the mindset of the individual competitor. Although generally concomitant with high training volumes, burnout often has more of a mental than a physical underpinning.A Concept Analysis of Burnout within the Nursing Profession The duty of taking care of other people and being responsible for their lives is a heavy burden for anyone to carry; and it can take its toll even among the best of us.In the nursing profession, burnout is a constant threat and is widely implicated for the alarming shortage of nurses that we are experiencing today.
Burnout was defined for the first time in the early 1970s by Freudenberger (1974) as a behavioral pattern suffered by volunteers of the Free Clinic of New York for drugs addicts. This pattern included progressive loss of energy, demotivation, lack of all interest in work until arriving at exhaustion.A number of these athletes drop out of sports due to burnout, which is characterized by an enduring experience of emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced sense of accomplishment and devaluation of sport participation as a consequence of prolonged chronic stress.
Burnout in athletes is thought to negatively influence the quality of their sport experiences, leading to decreased performance and ultimately discontinuing sport participation (17). Moreover, burnout is thought to negatively impact athletes’ well being both physically and mentally.
